08/23/07: Opening of a convention center in the Lenzen Castle

Brandenburg’s environment secretary Dietmar Woidke (SPD) inaugurated on 19th May 2007 the opening of the redeveloped Lenzen Castle in Prignitz as a Nature Conservation Center. The costs of the castle’s extension into a modern convention center as well as the conversion of the nearby school for the sake of a guest house (a total of over 2.8 Mio euro) were covered by the ministry of the environment and the EU structural funds.

The building accommodates also a Meadow Ecology Research Center as well as an Information Center for the Biosphere Reserve of River Elbe’s Fluvial Topography. The chief tenant is the association Trägerverbund Burg Lenzen, whose members are among others the city of Lenzen and further sections of BUND (German Society for the Protection of Nature).

BTE Tourismusmanagement, Regionalentwicklung (member of plan 4 21) has supported the project conceptionally from its very beginning. It started with a feasibility study (1997), which served as a basis for the successful grant application by DBU for conversion of the castle (subsidy amount ca. 3 Mio euro). The current financial aid from the local government of Brandenburg bases upon the profitability study from 2003 (updated 2005).

07/16/07: 8+ - speculative research

Eight storeys or more made of wood – the “acht plus” (“8+”) project conducted by schluder architektur in Vienna (member of plan 4 21) has the goal to proove, if and how this vision can be implemented into structural engineering.

This highly complex issue will be dealt with in form of a feasibility study, in order to point out new perspectives and assume their technical implementation potentials within structural engineering. It is a highly challenging task, requiring a cooperation in a highly qualified research team, consisting of structural engineering experts, as well as professionals sensitive for the financial and ecological aspects of the project.

As a result of the 8+ project a recapitulatory evaluation of chances for structural engineering by buildings over eight storeys will be presented to the public on the basis of a concrete example. The latter will be introduced as a showcase solution in a media report.
